Joe Satriani announces 2018 G3 Tour with John Petrucci and Phil Collen

Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani will be performing across North America throughout the winter in promotion of his upcoming album, What Happens Next, and he won’t be alone. Announced earlier this week, the instrumentalist will set off on a 25-date tour across the U.S. and Canada starting Jan. 11 alongside fellow guitarists John Petrucci of Dream Theater and Phil Collen of Def Leppard.

Titled the “G3 Tour,” the formation of the winter run will be the next installment of Satriani’s ongoing G3 project, which sees him touring alongside two other guitarists. Since starting back in 1996, Satriani has welcomed various musical guests into the G3 family, including Yngwie Malmsteen, King Crimson’s Robert Fripp, Eric Johnson, Deep Purple’s Steve Morse and Queen’s Brian May just to name few. This will be Petrucci’s sixth time on the G3 tour, which starts on Jan. 11 in Seattle and wraps up a month and a half later on Feb. 25 in Milwaukee, WI.

“I could say that I’m surprised at the durability of G3 and how much it’s grown, but in a way I’m not,” Satriani told Guitar World of new lineup. “I think part of its charm and its mojo is in the chemistry of having three top guitarists share what they do on stage. It’s fun, it’s unpredictable, it’s wild, it’s everything you could want in a show.”

The tour coincides with the release of Satriani’s 16th solo album, which is set to arrive the day after the tour kicks off on Jan. 12. As Guitar World reports, the new LP was recorded with Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes on bass and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith on drums. Fans will remember that Satriani and Smith were both members of the hard rock supergroup Chickenfoot.
