The special guest at Weezer's Nashville show last night didn’t require much rehearsal, if any at all. The band welcomed country sweetheart Kacey Musgraves onstage at their Ascend Amphitheater show to perform “Island in the Sun,” a song Musgraves regularly covers at her own shows.
The gang, outfitted in Hawaiian leis, invited the audience on a beach vacation as they played the 2001 hit in front of an animated island visual on a strange strewn with beach balls. Musgrave’s creative harmonies and bold vocals added depth to the chill song.
Musgraves verbalized her love for the good-time tune last summer when she included it on a list of her "10 Best Songs for a Summer BBQ." “My band and I cover this song live,” she told Cosmopolitan. “It instantly puts people's hands in the air and smile on their faces. Such an easy-going track.”
Musgraves later took to Instagram to memorialize the epic experience, writing, "HELL YES THIS WAS SO FUN! Thank you [Weezer] for havin' me up in Nashville tonight!" And the social love was mutual; a post of Weezer's account read: "The very talented [Kacey Musgraves] joined us onstage for a proper Nashville rendition of "Island" tonight. Thanks so much Kacey!!"
Weezer is currently headlining a summer tour with the revitalized Panic! at the Disco. Musgraves is in the midst of her Country & Western Rhinestone Review tour, which hits Los Angeles’ iconic Greek Theatre on Sept. 14.
