Kacey Musgraves has become a crossover country superstar with just one successful album, 2013’s Same Trailer Different Park. Fans who have been desperately awaiting new music from the singer now have a new track to enjoy: “Love is a Liar,” from the soundtrack to The Best of Me.
“Love is a Liar” has flown under the radar, earning little attention from the media and even from Kacey herself, who didn’t perform the song during her recent tour. She did post a message about the tune on her Facebook page, writing, “Excited about my song ‘Love is a Liar’ that's on the new Best of Me movie soundtrack. This was such a fun one to record!”
The track is straightforward country music with a rollicking edge thanks to electric guitars and an energetic beat. Penned by Musgraves and co-writers Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally, “Love is a Liar” describes frustration with failed relationships. She sings, “Love is a liar / Makes you think you’re on a high when you’re really just on a high wire / If love wore pants, they’d always be on fire.”
The song should be music to the ears of Musgraves fans, who are patiently waiting for the singer to begin recording major-label album number two. The Grammy and ACM winner for Country Album of the Year is looking forward to her next record as well. She recently tweeted, “God I can't wait to get back in the studio again. My creative bone is achin’.”
Musgraves earned four Top 40 country singles from her debut effort: “Merry Go ‘Round,” “Blowin’ Smoke,” “Follow Your Arrow,” and “Keep It To Yourself.” Same Trailer Different Park was certified gold with around half a million sales.
The Best of Me soundtrack also features contributions from Lady Antebellum, Colbie Caillat, Hunter Hayes, and Kip Moore. The album debuted at No. 52 on Billboard with 6,200 copies sold in its first week. That was enough to land at No. 11 on the Top Country Albums chart and No. 4 on Top Soundtracks. Based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, The Best of Me hit theaters on October 17 and earned close to $13 million in its opening week. The film stars James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan and tells the tale of high school lovers who meet again two decades later and attempt to reconcile.
