As predicted, Katy Perry's latest studio effort, Witness, is now the latest No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart which will update on Tuesday, June 20. The set was expected to debut with around 200,000 overall units and 175,000 being in actual album sales. That number is not too far off.
For the tracking week which ended on June 15, Perry's fifth album opens with 180,000 units which combine sales, streaming units and track downloads. 162,000 units were in pure album sales which easily makes it the No. 1 album on Top Album Sales as well. For every 1,500 streams from an album, that equates to one unit while ten downloads from a set also equates to a unit towards the final tally, a change made in December 2014.
Witness is Katy Perry's third No. 1 album on the Top 200 chart following 2013's PRISM which opened with a staggering 286,000 during a time when sales were still the leading factor in the formula but also when sales were still a dominant force in the industry. Perry's third album, Teenage Dream, debuted at the top as well with 192,000 copies sold in 2010.
Perry is only the second woman in 2017 to have a No. 1 album on the Top 200. Men have dominated both the Top 200 and the Hot 100 songs chart as leading females have been in between recording albums. Just in the previous tracking week, Halsey's Hopeless Fountain Kingdom opened at the top.
