Even though the Toronto Raptors acquired Kawhi Leonard with the hopes of keeping him long term, rumors persist that the dominant two-way player could still seek a path to Los Angeles. According to ESPN, Leonard is believed to still have his eyes on either the LA Clippers or Los Angeles Lakers when free agency hits next summer.
The Clippers previously tried to acquire Leonard, and there is also the possibility that the team explores a trade in-season, as well. Granted, Paul George appeared to desire a trade to Los Angeles last year, and he ultimately decided to re-sign with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
While personnel decisions are never a guarantee, Leonard remains a likely candidate to join the Clippers. Not only is the 27-year-old forward a California native, but he would have the ability to form his own super team with the Clippers. Through some creative cap handling, LA can afford two max contracts next summer. This would allow Leonard if he chose to come to the Clippers, to pick his running mate–be it a Jimmy Butler, Klay Thompson, or Kyrie Irving.
The Clippers could then use their influx of youth, captained by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jerome Robinson, to fill out the roster.
While the Clippers continue to build on what was an impressive 2017-18 campaign, given all the injuries, the future is clearly bright in Staples Center–both in 2018 and beyond.
