Powerhouse vocalist and songwriter Kelly Clarkson has gotten her Piece by Piece Tour underway this week so far visiting two cities to bring new and old material to fans. Since her "American Idol" days, she's been praised for her covers in which she always takes to the next level with her strong pipes and cooing breathy phrases.
Though Clarkson toured in 2013 with Maroon 5 on the Honda Civic Tour, this is her first proper tour of her own since 2012's Stronger Tour. During that tour, she introduced what she calls "Fan Request" in the setlist. For each show, a fan will tweet what they'd like to hear and Clarkson chooses one the day of that show. She's decided to continue with the requests for the Piece by Piece Tour. During her second stop in Mansfield, Mass., Clarkson chose Imagine Dragons true breakout song "Radioactive" that put them in the mainstream spotlight.
Kelly Clarkson's voice is capable of many styles and for "Radioactive" she kept it conservative, holding back on too many high notes giving it the styling only she can. Starting out with her guitarist Aben Eubanks picking through some grungy tones subtly, Clarkson soon amped the song up walking into the crowd on stage engaging fans around.
On the first leg of the Stronger Tour in 2012, Clarkson introduced the slot in the setlist first alternating between songs of hers and covers for the fan request. Towards the end, and during the second summer leg, she was choosing only covers, something fans adore. Clarkson has covered songs from various genres and artists including "Don't Speak" by No Doubt, "I'll Stand by You" from The Pretenders, Radiohead's "Creep" and current hits at the time such as "Call Me Maybe" and "Somebody That I Used to Know." In Detroit, Clarkson took a bold step and covered Eminem's "Lose Yourself" after having a few drinks and nailed it.
On the first night of the Piece by Piece Tour, Clarkson covered "Nobody Love" by up and comer Tori Kelly with soul along with her backup singers.
Kelly Clarkson's tour picks up in Holmden, New Jersey on July 14.
