Kelly Clarkson has been hard at work on her seventh non-holiday studio album which is slated for an Oct. 27 release via Atlantic Records. The powerhouse singer took to YouTube live on Sept. 6 to give details of the new album Meaning of Life, its sound and why she's excited for this era in her career. Clarkson also took questions from fans and gave two short live performances of new music with her team.
Clarkson began the lengthy video with a shout and went straight to the album news. "I'm, like, so out of breath, I'm so nervous!" she laughed.
"It's the greatest thing I've ever been a part of in 15 years so I'm so excited," she says of the new era. Clarkson signed to Atlantic Records in 2016 after 14 years with RCA Records following her 2002 "American Idol" win. "The inspiration behind the album is I'm free! I got to actually pick who I'm working with. Atlantic and I agreed on everything," she continued.
"I didn't know it could be like this. I literally just cried a lot before. It's really fun and really cool 15 years later to experience this," she said of her new partnership. "It's so good! The most amazing players, the most amazing writers are a part of this. Literally, the musicianship is just off the charts. It's very organic but it's got some contemporary feel to it," she continued mentioning Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, En Vogue and Bonnie Raitt.
On Meaning of Life, Clarkson enlisted high profile producers as well. Greg Kurstin has returned for another batch of songs after working together in 2011 on "Stronger" and "Dark Side," 2012's "People Like Us," the entire holiday album Wrapped in Red, and a large portion of 2015's Piece by Piece. She also worked with Jesse Shatkin (Sia), good friend of Kurstin, on half the album. Clarkson worked with Monarch, a producing and writing team she's never collaborated with. The album is executive produced by Craig Kallman who is CEO of Atlantic, successfully taking part in the A&R process.
During the live broadcast, Clarkson was asked what word she would use to describe the album.
"The new album in one word... I've got two words! I can't contain it. Of course I've got two words because I'm a tool. Boss, and sassy!" she said of the new album that will showcase her personality not seen on previous albums.
"I don't know if I can say this on YouTube. But it's a grown ass woman's record! Even though I've always wanted to record a record like this, I would have never been able to record it like it sounds now at the age of 19 or 20," she continued.
The three-time Grammy winner also touched on the music videos for the new album. Through the years, Clarkson has included her backing band in many videos and on new single "Love So Soft," her background singers played a major role in the set littered with effects. In true KC fashion, the songwriter slipped about details she shouldn't have announced yet.
"Oh! We're about to shoot 'Meaning of Life' too! Oh wait! We're not... it's just the title! Epic fail!" she laughed.
Along with the new album, Clarkson is sporting a classier style that accentuates her maturity.
"And this is my hair! It is big and it is Texas and I am talking to the Lord right now with my roots! But I love it! This is my diva era!"
While talking via video, Clarkson was presented with a Google Play button plaque for reaching 1 million subscribers on YouTube where she was told she could say what she did moments before.
"At least I didn't say my favorite four letter word! My mom gets real proud of that one!"
To finish the live video, Clarkson and her backup singers sang a few lines of new song "Move You" before she brought out the rest of the team to perform "Love So Soft."
Kelly Clarkson will perform shows in the future in support of the album. The two-time mother not only has a new record out on Oct. 27, she will release her second children's book "River Rose and the Magical Christmas" on Oct. 24. She's currently working on "The Voice" pre-taping which she briefly mentioned during the broadcast, carefully avoiding spilling too much information.
"Thank you all so much for tuning in! I hope you love the new music. If you don't, I don't care!" she shouted before concluding her announcements on the new album.
