Powerhouse pop singer Kelly Clarkson is known for her outstanding covers that run the gamut from blues and folk to rock and country. In her latest performance, during an appearance at the Microsoft store opening in Cerritos, Calif. on Sat. (Nov. 22), the singer took on Little Big Town's soulfully slinky "Girl Crush." The track, which taps into female attraction and adoration, is featured on the country quartet's newly-released album Pain Killer, which includes the current Top 5 hit (and climbing) "Day Drinking."
"Girl Crush" serves as the second official single from the album and has garnered acclaim across the board.
Clarkson previously has covered such massive hits as Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," Katy Perry's "Wide Awake," Adele's "Someone Like You," Vince Gill's "Go Rest High On That Mountain," Gavin DeGraw's "Not Over You" and Eminem's "Lose Yourself," among many others. The singer's 2012 Stronger Tour featured many other blockbuster covers, proving to be a fan favorite of her live performance show. The country-wide tour was in support of her last all-original full-length LP, Stronger—which ultimately spawned a massive hit in the title track, as well as "Mr. Know It All" and to a lesser extent "Dark Side." On her greatest hits follow-up, she landed even more success with "Catch My Breath" (a celebration of her 10 years since winning American Idol) and "People Like Us." Over her career, she's also dabbled in country, having landed a No. 1 hit with Jason Aldean on "Don't You Wanna Stay" and a re-imagined version of "Because of You" with Reba McEntire. For her solo entires, she earned hits with "Don't Rush" (featuring Gill on guitar and backup vocals) and "Tie It Up," which she debuted at the 2013 CMA Music Festival in downtown Nashville.
Little Big Town recently scored Vocal Group of the Year at the 48th CMA Awards: their second win in the category. They beat out Lady Antebellum, The Band Perry, Zac Brown Band and Eli Young Band for the title. With Pain Killer breaking the mold, there isn't any doubt that 2015 will be another great year for the traditional-leaning group, as far as hardware is concerned. In support of the new collection, the group launched their Pain Killer Tour on Nov. 8 and the 13-city trek continues through mid-December, wrapping in Rockford, Ill.
