Khalid announces short film 'Free Spirit' heading to theaters in support of new album

Khalid is not only releasing a new album, but he's making a new movie. According to Forbes, the critically acclaimed young rapper has finished a short film called "Free Spirit," which will play at select movie theaters next month. If seeing him on the big screen isn't enough, fans can also get tickets to see Khalid live here at AXS.

The movie was created to support Khalid's upcoming album, which is also called Free Spirit, and will take music fans inside the making of the album. It's a combination of film and listening party; Khalid has taped a special introduction that will play before the movie, and after it, audiences will be able to hear his new record in its entirety, along with commentary directly from the artist.

The timing makes it even more of a must-see event. "Free Spirit" releases two days before the album drops, so people who attend screenings on April 3 will also be among the first to hear his new music. But it won't be available at every movie theater; fans can go to Fandango to see if the film is playing in their area and purchase tickets.

This isn't the first time a rap artist has combined their album release with a movie; Vince Staples did the same thing when he dropped Prima Donna in 2016, though his project only included some of his new songs, not the entire record. And while Staples' movie was more about entertainment, Khalid's film is focused on offering audiences an inside look at his record that they won't get anywhere else.

Khalid is making a huge push behind his second album. He released the brightly colored music video for his newest single "Talk" last week; you can watch it now by playing the video above. The video already has more than 13 million views on YouTube. If his short film reaches even half that audience, it will be a success and get his music out to an even broader audience.

He's also performing at Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama on May 17; tickets for that festival are on sale now through the AXS event page. Ticket prices and more information are available on the event page.
