The Los Angeles Kings will have a pop socket giveaway when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Staples Center on Jan. 18. This will be the only time this season that the Kings will play host to the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins.
Pittsburgh won the 2016 Stanley Cup by beating the San Jose Sharks four games to two. They then defended their Stanley Cup title in 2017 by beating the Nashville Predators four games to two. On both occasions Penguins captain Sidney Crosby won the Conn Smythe Trophy, which was presented to the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In 48 games over the last two playoff seasons, Crosby has 14 goals and 32 assists for 46 points. He led all NHL players with 19 assists in the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
However this season, the Penguins are struggling just to get into the playoffs. Picked by many to win a third straight Stanley Cup, it is the Kings that are in a much better position at the halfway point of the regular season. The Penguins at 47 points, are one point back of the Carolina Hurricanes for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Kings are at 53 points and are in second place in the Pacific Division.
