On the heels of the film’s stunning success at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards, “La La Land’s” acclaimed soundtrack captured the number two spot on the Jan. 28 Billboard 200 chart. The record sold 42,000 album equivalent units, an increase of 83 percent from its previous position. As the album’s chart position was largely due to it's by traditional sales, La La Land: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack also ranked as number one on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart.
The album was kept for the top spot on the Billboard 2000 by The Weeknd’s latest record, Starboy, which topped the chart for the third week in a row with 63,000 album equivalent units sold. The soundtrack, which was primarily composed by Justin Hurwitz, won the Best Original Score Award at the 2017 Golden Globes, which aired on Jan. 8. The album is also heavily favored to win the 2017 Academy Award for Best Score, the nominations for which will be announced on Jan. 24.
