Lady Gaga has joined the YouTube billionaire club as her “Bad Romance” video crests over 1 billion views on the social platform. The feat marks the first time the Grammy-winning songstress has passed this peak.
“Bad Romance” hails from Gaga’s 2009 extended play The Fame Monster, which will turn 10 near the end of this year. It remains one of her signature songs and won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The critically-acclaimed video also won a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video.
Lots of strong themes and imagery are used throughout the intense visual, which was directed by Francis Lawrence. Gaga is kidnapped and sold off to members of the Russian mafia as a sex slave and is forced to do their bidding.
The razor blade sunglasses she wears make a standout statement, which she described in a MTV interview saying, “That tough female spirit is something that I want to project. It's meant to be, 'This is my shield, this is my weapon, this is my inner sense of fame, this is my monster.' "
Gaga has raised a loud voice for sexual assault survivors in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Last October, she was honored at the Elle Women in Hollywood ceremony and wore a pantsuit to symbolize her intent to “take the power back” from the man who assaulted her. She capped off the moving, emotional moment saying, “Today I wear the pants.”
2018 was a big year for the “Joanne” singer-songwriter as she made her feature film debut in the award-winning remake of “A Star Is Born,” opposite the film's director and lead actor Bradley Cooper. The duo and the film all received Golden Globe nominations. Gaga won a Best Original Song Golden Globe for “Shallow,” which she shared with co-writers Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomondo and Andrew Wyatt. She also won a Best Actress award from The National Board of Review, while Cooper won Best Director.
Gaga’s eclectic, edgy style has evolved since the “Bad Romance” video’s original release and she’s become keenly aware of public perception of her, based on the way she dresses. She spoke about it on opening night of her “Enigma” Las Vegas residency, telling her captive audience “they think I’m shallow,” before she engaged them in her first live performance of the “A Star Is Born” hit.
