Lambchop releases sublime cover of Prince's 'When You Were Mine'
Lambchop

Just as their North American and European tour is set to kick-off, Nashville-based alt-country band Lambchop has released a sublime cover of Prince’sWhen You Were Mine.” Although never released as a single, the track has become one of the Purple One’s most beloved songs. Inspired by the person Beatles front man John Lennon, “When You Were Mine” is a perfectly structured synth-pop classic about the pain of being totally dedicated to an utterly disrespectful lover.

Since its release in 1980, the track has been covered by a wide variety of musical luminaries including new wave icon Cyndi Lauper, Japanese rock The Pillows, folk punk innovator Ani DiFranco, indie pop duo Tegan and Sara, blue-eyed soul man Mitch Ryder, Danish electronica composer Heidi Mortensen and its melody is sampled on the Spice Girls hit single “Stop.” Lambchop’s cover turns the song into a hazy lounge ballad that is of a piece with the songs on the group’s acclaimed 2016 album, FLOTUS.
