Lil Wayne honors detective who saved his life during BET Hip-Hop Awards speech

Lil Wayne received the I Am Hip Hop Award during the airing of the annual BET Hip Hop Awards Tuesday night (Oct. 16). After thanking his friends and family, the rapper took the time to honor the former New Orleans homicide detective who saved his life after a suicide attempt when he was just 12 years old. Weezy affectionately refers to the detective as “Uncle Bob” and said that the detective rushed him to the hospital after other policemen “hopped over” him, as Pitchfork reports. You can check out the entire acceptance speech in the video above.

As Pitchfork also pointed out, it wasn’t until the recent release of Lil Wayne’s highly-anticipated Tha Carter V album that fans found out that his self-inflicted gunshot wound was a suicide attempt. Wayne had referenced Uncle Bob in 2016 when asked to clarify his comment that there was “no such thing as racism,” saying that a white cop had saved his life.
