Lisa "Insane" Blaine (2-0) loves that no media members gave her attention and that barely any fans were talking about her in the lead-up to Bellator 185. All the talk and buzz was about her opponent -- boxing world champion Ana Julaton. For Blaine, the media snubs and fan disinterest was perfectly fine.
It took all the pressure off her shoulders. Fighting on national television and making her promotional debut for Bellator MMA inside a packed arena? It was easy -- being that no one was expecting her to turn in a competitive performance. Flying under the radar and playing the role of the underdog wasn't a problem at all. It just made quieting her critics feel even more satisfying.
"Being the underdog makes the win that much sweeter, especially in my hometown," Blaine told AXS of her victory over Julaton. The Connecticut native had the Mohegan Sun crowd behind her from start to finish, as she picked the boxing legend apart over the course of three hard-fought rounds.
After the judges' scorecards were turned in, Blaine had her hand raised, scoring a win by split-decision. It was one of the biggest upsets in Bellator history.
The question now is: What's next? The MMA community quickly found out that the "Insane" one is legit, so she's not going to catch anyone by surprise. Now the target is on her back. Her next fight could be a top contender, as she looks to climb the flyweight ranks toward a title opportunity.
Blaine told AXS she has no one particular in mind for her next scrap. "I'm not calling out anyone," she said. With Blaine staying humble and drama-free, it'll be up to Bellator's matchmaking team to find a suitable opponent for her. Hopefully the next time the promotion heads to the East Coast, they'll include Blaine on the card.
