"Empire" star Jussie Smollett released his debut single "Freedom" on Jan. 4. He goes it alone on the new ballad.
"Freedom" is the lead single from Smollett's upcoming debut album, Sum of My Music. Jussie rose to prominence playing Jamal Lyon on FOX's show "Empire," where he has racked up a number of hit songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his castmates. Smollett teased his own music with last year's politically-charged "F.U.W." and he's continuing to aim for solo success with "Freedom."
Smollett's "Freedom" is not to be confused with the "Empire" song of the same name. Backed by a gospel organ and glints of synths, Jussie goes all in surrendering himself completely to love. "You see my scars and you know all my flaws / It's like freedom when you're with me," he sings. Smollett's voice is center stage as he takes the powerful lyrics to church. "Freedom" is a thing of beauty with Jussie preaching his heart out.
"Freedom" is now available on iTunes and Apple Music. Smollett's Sum of My Music album will be released on March 2.
