Mac DeMarco is back with another gem of a Christmas cover. In 2015, the singer-songwriter offered up a cover of the Irving Berlin Christmas classic made popular by crooner Bing Crosby, “White Christmas.” The cover made sense since Mac is a bit of a crooner himself. In 2017, DeMarco decided to tackle a more contemporary song in a relative sense. Mac has shared a lo-fi cover version of Paul McCartney’s 1979 holiday jingle “Wonderful Christmastime,” and in true Mac DeMarco fashion it is delightfully weird. You can listen to it above.
Although “Wonderful Christmastime” is considered by many critics to be one of McCartney’s more kitschy compositions, the single--which McCartney recorded all on his own--still enjoys radio time around the holidays. Whether you like it or not, it is estimated that the song has earned the former Beatle $400,000 a year since it’s release, meaning that all in all it has grossed around $15 million. Not too shabby for a whimsical Christmas song.
Mac DeMarco is set to perfrom at The Republik in Honolulu, Hawaii on Feb. 14. You can find tickets on AXS by clicking here.
