Chris Young has come a long way since winning the reality television competition "Nashville Star" back in 2006. While few stars come from these shows stable of winners, some like Carrie Underwood have become major stars. While Young has not reached the level of Underwood, he has done very well for himself, charting number one songs along the way. CMT reported on Monday that his most recent number one hit was announced to him when he appeared on "Today" on NBC television.
Young was on "Today" to perform his new single "I'm Comin' Over" when anchor Matt Lauer announced to the singer that the single that he was about to sing charted as the number one country song in the nation on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. Young got real excited at the announcement and threw his hands into the air, shouting in triumph. He was laughing and seemed very happy before turning to his crew and telling them that he hated them for not telling him, because he had no idea.
It is almost hard to believe for people who have followed Young since his starts on "Nashville Star," but this is now his fifth studio album. After winning the show, he released his self-titled debut and it hit third on the country charts and 22nd on the Billboard 200. His second album hit sixth on the country charts and 19th on the Billboard 200 and was his first gold certified album.
The third and fourth album both hit second on the country charts, his highest success there, and were also top 10 hits on the Billboard 200, reaching fourth and third. That third album, Neon, was also gold certified. Now, with I'm Comin' Over, Young is hoping for his first number one album. It hit stores this past week and the number one title track was the debut single. That is Young's sixth number one single and his first since 2011. It is also already certified gold, his ninth to reach that level.
Chris Young heads out in 2016 for his I'm Comin' Over tour. Cassadee Pope, who collaborated on a song on the album with him, will tour with him as the opening act.
