It is hard to believe that Farm Aid - Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp’s annual festival/benefit concert - is still going strong 30 years later. A lot has changed in the three decades that have passed since the concert’s initial show, the most obvious being the lineups over the years. The first Farm Aid included many classic rock and country performances, an impressive list of acts that was essentially a who’s who of music giants. This year, the organizers booked Imagine Dragons.
So, yeah, there has been some changes in the direction of Farm Aid. It must be said, though, that inviting Kacey Musgraves to the Farm Aid stage was a sensible choice. The singer released her critically acclaimed second studio album Pageant Material this year and is one of the most exciting acts in country music today. Her music sharply rejects the pop gloss candy flavoring of contemporary country for something that is bittersweet, nostalgic without being cloying, retro yet undeniably fortified with forward-thinking signifiers. And her live shows are classy affairs, the singer and her band always dressed in sharp matching suits that are as stylish and locked-in as their sounds.
