DFW native and country music superstar Kacey Musgraves had her car broken into earlier this week and she joked that she was thinking about writing a song about stolen boots. It was a nice idea for a country song and it seemed like pulling from the event would fit in well, especially for the stereotypical country music themes. However, her story would need to include a happy ending because Touch of Country reported on Thursday that the alleged thief was caught.
When her car was broken into on Jan. 5, the alleged thief stole two pairs of cowboy boots that were valued at $900. Reports sat that he busted out her window when she was parked in Nashville and took off with the expensive footwear. However, the man didn’t use common sense and never realized that the person he stole the boots from was a famous country music star.
The man, Darnell Cunningham, took the boots and the receipt that was stolen with them, to Lucchese Boots in Nashville the next day to get a refund. In a humorous moment, Cunningham had no idea that the receipt had Kacey Musgraves name on it. The manager remembered selling the boots to the country music star, saw her name on the receipt, and confronted the man.
Cunningham took the boots and allegedly ran from the store. The police arrested Cunningham and charged him with theft of property. Musgraves had said that the thief must have great taste in boots but cheap standards. With the attempt to return them, it appears the taste wasn’t there either, just a desire for money. Musgraves, who said she might write the song about it, tweeted after his arrest that “stupidity leads to victory.”
Kacey Musgraves has a couple of weeks to recover her boots from the police. Her next concert isn’t until Jan. 21 when she returns home to Dallas for a show at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. CST and tickets run $35 to $45 in advance. The show is an all-ages event but fans have to be 21 or older in order to drink.
