As expected, Kelly Clarkson's stirring performance of a stripped down "Piece by Piece" on "American Idol" has given the original winner another top 10 hit. The title track to parent album Piece by Piece debuts at No. 8 on the Hot 100 with the chart refresh on March 8. Kelly Clarkson has been somewhat low-key this album era after announcing a second pregnancy in summer 2015 and cancelled the remainder of her tour. The "Idol" performance breathed new life into an era that seemed all but dead.
The track sat at No. 1 on iTunes for days and indicated that it would do well on the charts. The song moves 35-1 on Digital Songs, giving Clarkson another No. 1 under her belt across any chart. The song moved 210,000 copies, also topping the Pop Digital Songs tally. However, digital downloads are just one piece of the formula for the Hot 100 and accounts for eighty-eight percent of the total. Over on Streaming Songs, the song saw just a small amount of streams with 3.1 million. It should be noted that Clarkson's "Idol" performance does not count towards the tally via YouTube because the content is not owned by Clarkson but rather "American Idol" and its parent company. The single remix, album version, and "Idol" version all count towards the songs charting.
"Piece by Piece" has seen some radio pickup for both the single remix and the ballad version as performed live on tour and on Feb. 25 on the singing competition. It re-enters the Adult Pop Songs at No. 33, a radio airplay only chart. With its sudden surge, "Piece" also debuts on Adult Contemporary at No. 23 where it is expected to have more airplay across the U.S.
The Piece by Piece era has been mediocre at best but one of the fan's favorites. Lead single "Heartbeat Song" kicked the era off and did fairly well across all charts, even earning Clarkson a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance. The song reached No. 1 on the Dance Club Songs chart, No. 2 on Adult Contemporary where songs are played timelessly, No. 6 on Adult Top 40 (also known as Adult Pop Songs as briefed above) and No. 19 on Mainstream Top 40 (also known as Pop Songs, an airplay only chart). On the Hot 100, "Heartbeat Song" barely missed the top 20 peaking at No. 21 the same week the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. "Invincible" was released as the second single from the album and peaked at No. 19 on AC, No. 11 on Adult Top 40 but did stellar on Dance Club Songs reaching No. 2. Any remix of the song counts towards that specific chart.
Over on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, Piece by Piece also makes giant strides, bolting from No. 120 to No. 6. The set moved 44,000 total units including actual sales along with streams (1,500 unique streams) and track downloads (every ten counts as one unit). The album performed well on iTunes for several days along with the single, also indicating that it too would do well when the sales tracking week ended on March 3.
