Canadian pop star Justin Bieber released his new album, Purpose, on Nov. 13. The collection features a remix of his hit single "What Do You Mean?" featuring fellow superstar Ariana Grande.
"What Do You Mean?" was released as the lead single from Bieber's comeback album, Purpose. The single debuted at no. 1 on Billboard in September and its follow-up, "Sorry," hit no. 2 last month behind Adele's mega-selling "Hello." In an effort to raise pre-order sales on iTunes, Justin announced last month that a remix of "Mean" with Grande would be available to those who put forth the cash to the digital retailer.
When first released, "What Do You Mean?" was already Bieber's finest moment as a musician. Following a year trying to make up for his bratty attitude, "Mean" arrived on the scene as the first taste of music since then. Taking hold of the tropical house sound recently bubbling under thanks to Kygo, Justin put the genre on the map with his breathy ode to indecision. Bubbly beats and a ticking clock back Bieber as he croons, "I really want to know / What do you mean?" There's no question about the guy's determination to churn out great pop music and this breath of fresh air is testament to that.
For the special remix, Grande jumps on "What Do You Mean?" Past the halfway point, she appears to supply the tune with breathy vocals of her own while including some runs in there for good measure. Bieber was already holding it down solo but Ariana makes the breezy tune even more of an enjoyable listen.
The remix of "What Do You Mean?" is an iTunes-only exclusive. Bieber is currently engaged in a chart battle with One Direction, the pop group who released its latest album, Made in the A.M., on the same day as Purpose. May the best man/men win before the arrival of Adele's monster record, 25, on Nov. 20.
