The official music video for “Navigate Below” by The Revivalists dropped on Nylon Guys last week on July 31, saying: "The Revivalists have managed to craft a genre-hopping sound all their own–one that translates all too well during live performances… The guys bring an undeniable big sound to the stage that’s backed by a plethora of instrumental talent that’s impossible to ignore."
Guitarist Zack Feinberg added, "When we wrote the song we wanted to be on the road playing music as much as possible. The video is kind of like a hopeful daydream about the thrills and challenges of the road ahead."
It’s true that the genre-hopping giants from New Orleans craft a sound that’s almost completely unique to themselves. David Shaw, vocalists for the group, has that unique taste to his voice that immediately sets them apart from the large variety of music being made. While not too heavy on that accent, it’s prevalent enough to fit into an almost exotic category without being too difficult to understand. When you stuff that into the mixing pot of traditional rock equipment you’d come to expect from modern greats, with a bit of funk, and jazz, you get something truly fantastic; a fresh sounding group, electrically primed, and ready for action.
“Navigate Below” has a video that fits the group’s personality well. One could argue that musicians have two lives–a persona on stage and the one they lead off. The Revivalist craves the tour life, so it’s fitting that the performance video showcases both sides of the coin. We get a glimpse of their spontaneous and impassioned performance in front of a densely packed crowds, and as well, the quiet of the life spent when the lights go out.
This coming Friday, Aug. 8, the group is scheduled to perform at FMQB’s Triple A Radio Conference in Boulder, Colorado, as well at The Fox Theatre at The Hill stage at 8:00 p.m. Following up nicely, The Revivalists will continue to whet the open road, entering the studio with John Shaefer for WNYC’s Soundcheck on Aug. 14 just before their show that evening at Watermark with the London Souls. For a comprehensive list of show dates to come, including the two former, see the below.
The Revivalists were recently featured as an Amazon “Artist To Watch,” and their album City Of Sound was released on Wind-Up Records with eight live bonus tracks in March during Mardi Gras. Following the release, the group gave a phenomenal show at Jazz Fest in their hometown of New Orleans which captured the attention of Rolling Stone, Spin, American Songwriter, Relix, and plenty more while captivating the audiences who came to see a good band and got a groundbreaking performance.
They’re a group that’s been featured from USA Today and Fuse TV to Paste, The Huffington Post and Daytrotter, even performing on the fourth and final season of HBO’s acclaimed drama series, Treme. Touring nonstop with festival circuits like Bonnaroo, Jazz fest, Voodoo Festival, Governor’s Ball, Hangout, Mountain Jam and so many more than you could list in a single article. This is a group that is not only impossible to ignore, you have no real reason to.
Appropriately named, The Revivalist bring to life much more than just great music, but the heart and soul of classic rock ‘n’ roll to its bare bones roots. A combination of that influential jazz, funk and speed that made the early artists iconic has been crammed together to make something truly special.
Upcoming stops on their tour include Peach Festival, Lockn’, Phases Of The Moon, Harvest, Terminal West in Atlanta, and a Halloween show at Emo’s in Austin before a home-town performance at Tipitina’s on Nov. 1.
