“Mash Up Monday” is one of the more fun late night segments in rotation. And the thing is, is that the practice of smushing together two seemingly incompatible acts to form one act seems like it will never work. Like last time, Kimmel and his producers paired together Jewel and Kool & The Gang to make Jewel & The Gang. It sounds terrible on paper! But when it played out it had a perverse and operable logic to it that made you think that Kimmel actually knows what he’s doing when it comes to this, and he isn’t just blindly slapping things together and hoping that it sticks.
That’s what it seems like at least. He may indeed be slapping things together. It’s not for us to figure out, we just have to watch and enjoy, and last night, Kimmel did it again. Though Boyz II Men came out with an album last year, they are one of those nostalgia groups whose previous new jack swing work will forever define them. So last night, Kimmel invited the Boyz to the stage to perform their hit “Motownphilly” along with another boy, Fall Out Boy to be exact. Yeah, you got it, Fall Out Boyz II Men. The two groups performed, and it was definitely another case of, “Man, is this the one that is terrible?” It wasn’t. It was great. Watch it below.
