The Ontario Reign decided to sign center Philippe Maillet to an American Hockey League contract on Thursday. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Maillet played 64 games for the Ontario Reign in 2017-18. He had 18 goals and 18 assists for 36 points in 64 regular season games. He had 18 penalty minutes and was a +3. Maillet also played four games in the 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs for Ontario and had two goals.

Both of Maillet's playoff goals for the Reign in 2018, came in the same game, a 5-1 Reign win over the Texas Stars on April 20. Maillet opened the scoring with a power play goal from Brett Sutter and Sean Walker at 16:33 of the first period and then scored his second goal of the game at 15:15 of the third period unassisted which put the Reign up 4-1 at the time. It would be the only time during the 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs that the Reign won a game as they lost the best out of five series to the Stars three games to one.

A left handed shooter, Maillet is one of the smaller players on the Reign at 5'9", 165 pounds. He played his junior career with the Victoriaville Tigres of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2009-2013. In his final year with the Tigres in 2012-13, he led Victoriaville in assists with 58 and points with 83.

Maillet then went on to play four seasons with the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds from 2013-2017. In his final season with the Reds, in 2016-17, he led the team with 23 goals, 32 assists and 55 points in only 30 games. Maillet also won back-to-back University Cups (Canadian university hockey championship) with the Reds in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, the Reds beat St. Francis Xavier X-men 3-1 in the final in Halifax, Nova Scotia and in 2017, the Reds beat the Saskatchewan Huskies 5-3 in the final in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
