The Western Conference will become even more competitive next year.
The Phoenix Suns won the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery, giving the franchise its first No. 1 overall pick. Phoenix finished with a league-worst 21-61 record, giving them the best odds to win the lottery.
Following the announcement, Suns general manager Ryan McDonough exclaimed that it was “a historic day for the franchise.”
The top two prospects for June’s NBA Draft are Arizona big man DeAndre Ayton and European star Luka Doncic. The Sacramento Kings will own the second pick in the draft, while the Atlanta Hawks will select third.
Regardless of who the Suns take at No. 1, they will have the luxury of pairing one of the top young talents in the world to go along with sharpshooter Devin Booker and promising sophomore Josh Jackson.
Jackson represented the Suns at the draft, and he told ESPN that he was hopeful that the organization would choose Ayton with the pick. Meanwhile, there is a feeling that Doncic might make sense, given his prior relationship with the Suns’ new head coach Igor Kokoskov.
“We'll certainly weigh it pretty heavily," McDonough said. "He's our head coach and has a good track record of evaluating players, developing players.”
Following this season, the NBA Draft Lottery will undergo a remodeling, where the worst teams won’t be as incentivized to lose games.
