Back in March, Damon McMahon aka Amen Dunes released his fifth studio album, Freedom. The album is undoubtedly his true breakthrough. Where his previous albums were submerged in murky sonics and lo-fi and ramshackle folk touches, McMahon presents Freedom with an astonishing sense of clarity, immediacy, and sheen.
Last night (Aug. 9), McMahon opened his 2018 tour at a sold-out Troubadour in Los Angeles. In a welcome turn of events, McMahon decided to forego the usual opening formalities and instead invited comedy character Neil Hamburger to warm up the crowd. Hamburger’s scabrous humor was a sharp contrast to the music that followed. McMahon’s music isn’t deadly serious, but listening live you get the sense that there is a weight to his words and sound. The crowd stood rapt for the set which ran through most of Freedom as well as a few songs from his 2014 effort, Love. Check out the photos above.
