Brittney Reese of Inglewood, California won the gold medal in a women's long jump Diamond League event in Eugene, Oregon on Friday. Reese posted a winning jump of 7.01 metres, which was the longest jump in the world this season.
Reese, who won the gold medal in the women's long jump at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and a silver medal in the women's long jump at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, was 0.18 metres longer than reigning Olympic gold medalist Tianna Bartoletta of Elyria, Ohio, who finished in second place behind Reese on Friday with a seasonal best jump of 6.83 metres.
Lorraine Ugen of Great Britain won the bronze medal with a jump of 6.78 metres. Ugen reached the podium by .08 metres over fourth place finisher Darya Klishina of Russia. Klishina was competing not for Russia, but as an authorized neutral athlete. The model is not allowed to compete for Russia internationally because of the sanctions imposed on Russia by the International Association of Athletics Federations.
Reese meanwhile is a three-time world champion in the women's long jump and a three-time world indoor champion in the women's long jump as well. The gold medal in Eugene will give her confidence if she decides to prepare for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
