Netflix has set Aug. 10 as the premiere date for Rev Run's Netflix sitcom "All About the Washingtons," which is based on his real-life family. The show is about the fictional Washington family, headed by retired hip-hop star Joey Washington (played by Rev Run whose real name is Joseph Simmons) and his wife, Justine Washington, played by Rev Run's real-life wife, Justine Simmons. Four actors portray the pre-teen and teenage Washington children: Nathan Anderson, Kiana Ledé,, Leah Rose Randall and Maceo Smedley. In real life, Rev Run has six children: three daughters and three sons.
Rev Run (who co-founded Run DMC) and his family starred in the MTV reality show "Run's House" from 2005 to 2009. At the time, the Simmons children were teens and pre-teens. When celebrities star in reality shows about their personal lives, the shows often look staged and scripted. Some might say it's a wise move for Rev Run to just do an entirely scripted show instead of trying to do another reality show with his kids, most of whom are now adults. According to a Netflix description of "All About the Washingtons," wife Justine "takes advantage of the opportunity to pursue a career of her own now that Joey is available to focus on raising the kids and keeping the house in order."
In "All About the Washingtons," the Joey Washington character is retired as a music artist. But Rev Run still performs occasionally with Run DMC, which is set to do some U.K. concerts this summer, including a July 5 show with Slick Rick at Eventim Apollo in London. The other member of Run DMC is Darryl McDaniels. Run DMC's longtime DJ, Jam Master Jay, was murdered in 2002 at the age of 47. His murder remains unsolved.
