Progressive rockers Coheed and Cambria performed to a near capacity crowd at Oakland’s Fox Theater on Friday April 14 for their third show supporting the Neverender GAIBIV tour. Celebrating their 2005 opus Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness, they played the album in its entirety, an album which fans and critics alike consider the band’s 2112 or The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

Covering the 10th anniversary of the album, Pop Matters stated the band’s fantasy tale called “The Amory Wars,” whose saga is explored throughout their entire catalog, is set in Heaven’s Fence, a collection of dozens of planets connected by beams of energy called the Keywork. The tale explores death, destiny, redemption, and revenge in relation to the Kilgannon family and antagonist Wilhelm Ryan, the “Supreme Tri-Mage”/”Archmage” of Heaven’s Fence. Good Apollo itself revolves around Claudio Kilgannon, son of Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon, and his quest to protect the Keywork. Interestingly, the album not only follows the story but also breaks the fourth wall including the story of the writer of the “The Amory Wars”, and how he creates the tale from characters and issues in his own life.

To see a band play an entire album from start to finish is always a unique experience, and Coheed and Cambria did not disappoint. From opener “Keeping the Blade” to climax “The Wishing Well III: The Final Cut”, the band sounded like a well-oiled machine, breathing new life into the album complete with visuals in the background displaying surrealistic images splashed across three giant screens.  The audience sang along to every song, with air-guitarists scattered throughout and heads bobbing to the beats.  The band tore through the entire album without a word to the audience until it was over, thanking them for their support.  They wrapped up the night with 3 encores and staples of their live show; Color of the Sun’s “Island”, The Second Stage Turbine Blade’s “Delirium Trigger”, and the title track to In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3

The rest of the tour see the band in Santa Ana and San Diego, then heading to Arizona, Colorado, Texas, with several dates on the East Coast.  They are also hitting several festivals including Carolina Rebellion, Welcome to Rockville, and Rock On The Range before heading overseas to the Download Festival at Donnington Park in England.
