Rick Rubin to receive Legendary Genius Award at Spotify's Secret Genius Awards, Frank Ocean is presenting

Spotify will hold their inaugural Secret Genius Awards at Los Angeles’ Vibiana Cathedral in a few days on Nov. 1. The event will look to honor “the best songwriters, producers and publishers in the industry,” and will also be shining a well-deserved spotlight on Rick Rubin, who will be this year’s Legendary Genius Award recipient. Rubin will be presented with the award at the event by Frank OceanPitchfork reports. 

For those who are unfamiliar with Rubin’s work, the 54-year-old producer and record executive was largely responsible for helping establish hip-hop into the mainstream with his Def Jam label back in the 1980s. Def Jam was famously launched out of Rubin’s dorm room at New York University along with Russell Simmons, and would go on to launch the careers of artists like the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J. Rubin was also the mastermind behind the now-famous Aerosmith and Run D.M.C. “Walk This Way” collaboration, which would relaunch the classic rock band’s career in the mid-80s in addition to introducing the young hip-hop trio to a new generation of rock fans.

According to last month's announcement, The Secret Genius Awards will include 13 nomination categories with five nominees each. In addition to each category being broken down by genre, others will include “Breakthrough Songwriter,” “Best Social Message” and “Best Motion Picture Adaptation” to name a few.

Troy Carter, Spotify’s Global Head of Creator Services, commented on the program in adding, “Songwriters and producers are the backbone of the industry and we want to help celebrate these incredibly talented people. The goal of Secret Genius is to give credit where credit is due by shining a light on these amazing creators.”

Announced back in June, Secret Genius is the streaming platform's latest initiative to strengthen its relationship with the creative community. In addition to launching the awards ceremony, the program will also look to build an ambassador program, establish global songwriting workshops which will be named “Songshops,” and continue building onto their featured podcasts and curated playlists.
