The San Diego Seals of the National Lacrosse League will have the fortune of having the number one selection in the 2018 NLL Entry Draft in September of 2018. The Seals won a ceremonial coin toss over the Philadelphia Wings on Saturday during halftime of game two of the National Lacrosse League Cup between the Saskatchewan Rush and Rochester Knighthawks.
By winning the coin toss, the Seals had a choice of selecting first overall in the 2018 NLL Entry Draft or first overall in the 2018 NLL Expansion Draft, which will take place in July. The Seals decided to take their luck in the entry draft and will have the second overall pick in the expansion draft.
The Seals will have the opportunity to select players from either junior A in Canada or college graduates from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The first overall pick from the 2017 NLL Entry Draft was Josh Byrne of the Burnaby Lakers and Hofstra University, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bandits. In 18 games, Byrne had 26 goals and 37 assists for 63 points in his NLL rookie season. He was also the 2017 Major Lacrosse League rookie of the year while playing for the Chesapeake Bayhawks.
The Rush and Knighthawks meanwhile will play game three of the 2018 National Lacrosse League Cup on Saturday from the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon. The series is currently tied at one game apiece.
