Shania Twain and Jake Owen will star in "Real Country," a new country music singing competition from one of the producers of "The Voice." The news was announced Monday through a press release from USA, which will film the series in Nashville over the summer before airing it this fall.
"Real Country" will involve Twain and Owen selecting country acts for showcase performances that highlight specific subgenres of country music. The acts, which can be not just solo artists but also duos and groups, will perform for the right to move on to the show's grand finale. USA did not give any details about the competition past that point, saying only that competitors will have "the chance to be named one of country music's next breakout acts."
Auditions are being accepted now through the show's casting website.
One of the show's producers is Stijn Bakkers, who executive produces "The Voice" for NBC, as well as the spinoffs "The Voice UK" and "The Voice Kids." USA is a sister network to NBC; both are owned by NBCUniversal.
Country music has become a huge part of "The Voice" with Blake Shelton being that show's winningest coach, and several country artists either winning the competition or being the runner-up over the last several years. But "Real Country" will be the first singing competition devoted specifically to country music since "Nashville Star" back in 2008. USA was the home of the first four seasons of "Nashville Star," which helped to launch the careers of several successful country singers, including Miranda Lambert and Chris Young. Now the network will be hoping for the same success with a new series.
"It’s been an incredible year for me, releasing my new album and coming back to country music," Twain said in Monday's press release. "I feel it’s time for me to add my own support in finding our greatest undiscovered talent. It’s beyond thrilling to be leading the charge with 'Real Country' and I’m on a mission to find artists who will keep country music diverse and dynamic. The kind of diversity that inspired all of us."
""Country music truly seems to be the healing factor in a lot of people’s lives," added Owen in the same release. "I will always be grateful for music, whether I’m performing or listening, and I want to encourage up-and-coming artists to tell their stories, find their audiences and make their mark in country music with the same guidance that artists have given to me throughout my journey."
