The English Beat are headed out on tour across North America this fall. The band, which is still lead by founding member and principal songwriter/singer in Dave Wakeling, will start their run across the United States this Friday, Sept. 29 in Folsom, , and won’t be stopping until the end of the year with a final show at The Canyon in Santa Clara, Calif. on Dec. 31.
Also known as just “The Beat” over in their founding hometown of Birmingham, U.K., the 2-tone ska band helped revitalized the genre along with new forms of reggae and new wave in the early 1980s. Wakeling, along with the band’s former toaster (rapper meets hype man) Ranking Roger, released their debut album in 1980, and would go on to introduce ska themed singles to pop radio including “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Too Nice To Talk To,” “Hands Off She’s Mine” and the always popular “Save It For Later.”
In recent years the band has been divided into two different versions, with Wakeling holding onto the band’s original name and branding. Wakeling, who resides in both the U.K. and Los Angeles these days, used a crowdfunding campaign to record the band’s first album since 1983 with a new LP titled Here We Go Love. Unfortunately for fans, the album has been stuck in production purgatory over the past few years, mostly thanks to a busy touring schedule Wakeling keeps on a yearly basis. Ranking Roger’s version of the band however, released their own new album titled Bounce back in September 2016. The two would end up reuniting on stage during a show in Birmingham nearly a year ago last fall.
