The spirit of summer was alive and well over the weekend at the One Love Cali Reggae Fest in Long Beach. The second annual festival brought in huge crowds, who brought with them a love of good music and good vibes.
Friday’s list of performers included Janelle Phillips, White Glove Service, Ital Vibes, Quinto Sol, Leilani Wolfgramm, Arise Roots, Inna Vision, Simpkin Project, Through The Roots, The Aggrolites, The Expanders, Fishbone, Hirie, Fortunate Youth, Stick Figure, SOJA and Slightly Stoopid. Not even the rain kept festival-goers from packing into The Queen Mary to see their favorite acts.
Saturday’s lineup brought in an array of people who flocked to see Tyrone's Jacket, The Late Ones, Rising Sun, Kash'd Out, Ethan Tucker, The Holdup, Josh Heinrichs & Skillinjah, Rdgldgrn, Passafire, Protoje, Seedless, War, Israel Vibration, Don Carlos, Chronixx, The Green, J Boog, Iration and Rebelution.
Come Sunday, even the sunshine showed up to catch Aloha Radio, Iya Terra, Perro Bravo, The Ziggens, The Steppas, Katastro, Mike Love, Pacific Dub, Shwayze, Tha Dogg Pound, Anuhea, Long Beach Dub All Stars, The Wailers, Steel Pulse, 311 and Dirty Heads.
AXS was there for the experience and even got to go behind the scenes to see The Wailers play songs off of the album Legend, just as the sun was setting. There isn’t a festival around of this magnitude that spotlights reggae music and gives dedicated fans an opportunity to see all the artists they love on the same bill.
The One Love Cali Reggae Fest encompassed everything wonderful about the magic of music festivals. Between the two stages, the good grub from Pink Taco, and the spirit of the people who showed up, lucky music enthusiasts who were in attendance were treated to a brief taste of summer fun in the midst of a cool California winter. If you haven’t made it yet, this is one festival you’ll need to mark in your calendar for next year.
