The Beatles-centered group The Weeklings, released their brand new single on Sept. 1. With Lefty Weekling (Glen Burtnik) on bass guitar and vocals, Zeek Weekling (Bob Burger) on rhythm guitar and vocals, Rocky Weekling (John Merjave) lead guitar and vocals and Smokestack Weekling (Joe Bellia) drums and vocals, the song pops as the group's version of “Paperback Writer,” and it will be of interest to both fans of the Beatles and the Monkees.
For Beatles fans “Paperback Writer” captures the essence of the Fab Four while having The Weeklings' own flavor. The group don't try to mimic the Beatles, but they do have the spirit that made the Fab Four so enjoyable to listen to. And Monkees fans will notice something near the end of the song. The group has added riffs of song familiar to them – “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” It's a nice bonus that gives the song some added charm.
The song is available for digital purchase on Amazon.com and on iTunes. The group already has two albums, the self-titled “The Weeklings,” which was their debut, and “Studio 2,” which was inside Abbey Road Studio 2. Both albums contain their versions of well-known and obscure Beatles songs, plus some group originals.
For those on the East Coast, the group is playing a number of live gigs there through the remaining months of the year, according to their website. You can hear Lefty Weekling (Burtnik) and Zeek Weekling (Bob Burger) talk about their most recent album on this episode of the “Things We Said Today” podcast.
