The Weeknd invests in OverActive Media

OverActive Media, the parent company behind the esports organization Splyce and the Overwatch League team Toronto Defiant, announced a new investor for their company. Famed R&B singer The Weeknd is now part of OverActive Media’s investor's group. As a self-proclaimed fan of esports, The Weeknd will have a role in collaborating with both teams, though the exact nature of these collaborations has yet to be revealed.

Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye was born in Toronto, Ontario. As such, his backing of OverActive Media, a Canadian based company, makes sense. Toronto Defiant, the Overwatch League (OWL) team from Toronto, now has a Toronto native backing them.

Toronto Defiant is currently playing in the OWL’s 2019 season. The second week of Stage 2 will begin on April 11. Toronto Defiant’s first match of this week is against Philadelphia Fusion. It is set for 9:15 p.m. Pacific Time on April 11.

Toronto Defiant branches off from the esports organization Splyce. Each team from Splyce falls under the overarching company, OverActive Media. Splyce fields teams for several titles, including but not limited to “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,” “League of Legends,” “Halo,” and “Rocket League.”

Followers of Toronto Defiant and Splyce need to wait to see what The Weeknd will bring to the table as an investor in OverActive Media.
