This week in hip-hop: Grammy noms, Kanye meltdowns and ‘Best Of’ lists

As the holiday season and the year’s close are quickly approaching, many artists are scrambling to drop new music, remain relevant and in some cases, regain sanity.  Let’s break down the past week in hip-hop.

And like that, Grammy season is upon us

Each year when the Grammy Award nominations are announced there is a flurry of discussion about merit, bias and countless other arguable factors. This year’s crop of artists inspired the same discussion, but there were a few one offs to spark up the debate-inspiring award show. De La Soul have garnered the first nomination of a kickstarter funded album, while Chance The Rapper was nominated several times for the first ever streaming-only album consideration.  Way to make history, hip-hop!

‘Tis the season for the almighty list

Speaking of history, the forthcoming Hip Hop Hall Of Fame + Museum is allowing heads an opportunity to be a part of the historical retelling of the culture by contributing to their donation drive. But that’s not the only list that’s coming into play this week. It’s “Best Of” list time, and although these lists are highly contested, AXS’ nod to the great projects of 2016, was pretty solid and included a ton of fantastic hip-hop albums. Read the AXS Picks: Best Albums Of 2016 list and see what we thought.

Kanye’s at it again

Poor Kanye, he’s been getting it from all angles, but there’s some silver lining, although it’s not his new blonde hairdo.  It seems that the rapper/producer/media darling is back in the studio cooking up something fresh, but it’s all speculation so far. A post by legendary producer, Pete Rock implied that the pair may be working together soon, and a drop of a blend tape from a few talented DJs mashed him and Chance The Rapper together. Oh, and he also garnered eight Grammy nominations, so that’s some consolation for his rough week.

Music to the rescue

Tons of new music dropped this week which was received with open arms by the hip-hop community, well, that is until they proceeded to rip it apart. New albums were gifted by Ab-Soul, J. Cole, Tech N9ne and Yasiin Bey (who also promised two more forthcoming). Atmosphere dropped a weird video for their latest single,  Vic Mensa let loose on “Heathens” and De La Soul dropped visuals for the track, “Memory of…” featuring Pete Rock.
