Damn The Torpedoes are a rock and roll band from Austin who have built national following as one of the premiere Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute bands in the country. The five-piece group will be heading out on short fall tour of the eastern U.S. starting later this month on Oct. 14. The six date tour should bring some heavy moments with the shocking passing of Petty on Monday evening at just the age of 66.
Damn The Torpedoes formed 10 years, and have spent the last decade “mesmerizing audiences” while delivering a “complete Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert experience” on stage. The band is named after Petty’s 1979 album, which consisted of two of the original band’s biggest hits in "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That." Like many passionate classic rock fans, the band took to their Facebook page to say a few words in memory of their fallen hero.
“Tom Petty, we thank you wholeheartedly for your music and the inspiration it has given so many,” the band said on their social media outlet. “We pledge to carry on that legacy so others can also experience the joy of your music.”
Fans will surely be wanting to turn to music to remember Petty, who became one of the biggest names in commercial rock music starting in the mid-1970s alongside is Heartbreakers backing band. Petty and his longtime team just wrapped up their own North American tour at the Hollywood Bowl last week. The final show in his home city of Los Angeles capped off a successful 40th Anniversary Tour, which was already expected to be the band’s last real go at life on the road.
