Tom Petty box set to include 60 rare tracks of unreleased songs

Tom Petty's legacy is celebrated in the 60-track rarities box set An American Treasure, which Reprise Records will release on Sept. 28. The vinyl version of An American Treasure will be released Nov. 23. The box set has many previously unreleased tracks from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, as well as from Petty's solo career and his pre-fame band Mudcrutch. One of those previously unreleased tracks is "Keep a Little Soul," which was recorded during the 1982 sessions for the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album Long After Dark. The video for "Keep a Little Soul" premiered on July 11, the same day that the official Tom Petty website's redesign was unveiled.

Petty died of an accidental drug overdose on Oct. 2, 2017. He was 66. Earlier that year, he and the Heartbreakers had completed their 40th-anniversary tour. During his long career, Petty was considered one of the most respected and influential singer-songwriters of the rock era. He won three Grammy Awards: First, for his work with the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys (which consisted of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne), and then as a solo artist and then with his band the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Stevie Nicks, who frequently collaborated with Petty in her solo career from Fleetwood Mac, is now working with Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, who joined Fleetwood Mac earlier this year.

The American Treasure box set was curated by Petty's daughter Adria and widow Dana; Petty's Heartbreakers bandmates Campbell and Benmont Tench; and Petty's studio collaborator Ryan Ulyate. Campbell, Tench and Ulyate have producer credits for An American Treasure, while Adria and Dana Petty have executive producer credits. Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering remastered the 60 tracks on An American Treasure. Shepard Fairey did the cover art from a photograph taken by Mark Seliger.

An American Treasure will be released in four formats:

An American Treasure: Deluxe Edition — A 4-CD set with all 60 tracks, plus a 52-page booklet with rare and previously unseen photographs, detailed track-by-track liner notes by journalist Bud Scoppa.

An American Treasure: Super Deluxe Limited Edition —A 4-CD set with all 60 tracks and an 84-page hardbound book expanded from the Deluxe Edition to include additional photographs and an essay by author Nicholas Dawidoff. This special package also includes a newly created lithograph of Fairey’s cover artwork, a numbered certificate of authenticity and custom reproductions of Petty’s handwritten lyrics to four songs.

An American Treasure: Vinyl Edition—A 6-LP set that features all 60 tracks, the same 48-page booklet in the CD Deluxe Edition and the Dawidoff essay.

An American Treasure: Standard Edition—A 2-CD set that features 26 career spanning tracks were chosen from the Deluxe editions, as well as Scoppa’s liner track-by-track notes.

An American Treasure is the latest of several retrospective collections of Petty's music that have been released over the years. Prior to An American Treasure, the most recent reissues were in December 2016, when Universal Music Enterprises and Reprise/Warner Bros. Records released two vinyl box sets of Petty's studio albums with Heartbreakers and as a solo artist: The Complete Studio Albums Volume 1 (1976-1991) and The Complete Studio Albums Volume 2 (1994-2014) .
