Upcoming Cher Broadway musical to debut at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre next summer

The musical story about the life and career of Cher will debut under the bright lights of Broadway in the fall of 2018. Before the previously announced "The Cher Show" arrives at New York City’s Neil Simon Theatre however, it will see a limited preview run at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre on June 12 and 15 of next year.

According to the famous singer and actress, the full scale production will now open in the midwest city a few months to its Broadway debut. The news of the musical’s preview came on Thursday via Cher’s own Twitter account, and follows the initial announcement of the production back in the summer. As of Friday afternoon, "The Cher Show" still has no official date for its opening night on Broadway.

The news about a full-scale musical chronicling the life and musical journey of Cherilyn “Cher” Sarkisian originally came back on June 6, when the veteran performer also confirmed the news through her Twitter in announcing, “Just got off phone w/Writer & Director of musical. There will [be] performance in theatre with actors, dancers, singers!! It'll be on Broadway 2018." The director she’s referring to is none other than Tony Award nominee Jason Moore. Moore was at the helm of the hit musical Avenue Q, and also made his Hollywood directorial debut with the popular 2012 musically-themed feature film, Pitch Perfect.

"My life as a musical on Broadway: It seems crazy, exciting and bizarre – but that's probably how my life seems to most people," Cher added in a statement following the initial report.

Cher rose to fame in the mid-1960s, as one half of Sonny & Cher. The husband and wife duo would become one of pop music’s first real power couples with their 1965 summer love anthem, “I Got You Babe.” She isn’t the only showbiz icon set to arrive on Broadway in the near future, as Bruce Springsteen is also planning on kicking off his own eight-week Broadway residency at the Walter Kerr Theatre starting on Oct. 3.

Cher was also recently honored with the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards earlier this summer.
