Taylor Mathews gained national attention appearing on "America's Got Talent" in 2010, and he's coming back to make another national splash with his upcoming EP entitled Thales. Get your first look (and listen) at the forthcoming EP by watching the video for its first single "shallowman", which you can check out by playing the video above.
Mathews auditioned for "America's Got Talent" during the NBC reality show's fifth season, the same season that featured Lindsey Stirling, Jackie Evancho, illusionist Murray SawChuck and band The Strange Familiar. He outlasted all of them except Evancho, making it to the Top 10 before being eliminated in the semifinals. He has transformed himself into an equally engaging but completely different artist in the eight years since, and "shallowman" demonstrates just how far he's come from his reality TV start. Everything "America's Got Talent" fans loved is still there, but it's now just one part of what makes Taylor Mathews worth listening to.
As seen in the video, Mathews has transformed himself from an adorable fresh-faced singer to a more mature performer with a little bit of reality tempering his worldview. He still knows how to make engaging pop music, but there's more going on in "shallowman" and it has more of a serious hook than anything he's done in the past. According to the press release accompanying the video and EP announcement, Mathews wrote roughly 100 songs ahead of his new release while also touring extensively. He's got much more experience as a songwriter as well as more life experience, and that comes through in the first single from his next EP.
Thales is the follow-up to Mathews' debut album Do What You Want To, which came out in 2013. According to the press release, that record debuted among the Top 40 on the iTunes Top Albums Chart and sold more than 10,000 singles as an independent release. That's a very high bar to clear, and a long wait. Yet based on the first single, it will live up to all the anticipation. It's been almost a decade since Taylor Mathews appeared on "America's Got Talent," and his talent has only grown since then.
"shallowman" is now available on iTunes. Thales will be released later in 2018; a specific release date was not confirmed in the press release. Taylor Mathews has not yet announced any tour dates in support of his upcoming EP, but music fans can keep up with announcements of future concerts at his website.
