Billy Joel made a rare television appearance on Sept 12 during the season two television premiere of “Harry.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer teamed up with host Harry Connick Jr for a duet on the 1980 single “Don't Ask Me Why” and also performed “Vienna” from his classic 1977 studio album The Stranger.
Billboard reports on Sept. 12 that the six-time Grammy winner was the featured guest as the popular syndicated talk show began its second season. The Piano Man has not appeared on a daytime TV show since guesting on “Oprah” nearly a decade ago.
Along with the musical performances, the “Just the Way You Are” hitmaker also chatted extensively with fellow singer and show host Connick Jr. Interview topics ranged from Joel's home life to his ongoing rivalry with former co-headline tour mate Elton John.
Fans can get a taste of what they missed via a 3:53-minute performance of the legendary New York singer-songwriter and band performing “Vienna.” Following the song's introduction, Connick Jr joins in on accordion as Joel sings, “Slow down you crazy child/You're so ambitious for a juvenile.”
“Vienna” served as the flip side to the multi-platinum seller's 1977 single “She's Always a Woman.” Joel has long cited the self-penned ballad as a personal favorite along with his 1976 Turnstile chestnut “Summer, Highland Falls.”
Joel still has several live dates remaining in 2017. His next appearance will take place Sept. 21 in St. Louis at Busch Stadium and will be followed by his monthly hometown residency stop on Sept. 30 in New York at Madison Square Garden.
