Eminem delivered a Valentine’s Day treat to his fans with the release of his new video for “River,” which features co-writer Ed Sheeran. The video opens in a documentary-style format, with the Detroit native rapper sitting in alone in a chair, contemplating the question “What does love mean to you?” His onscreen girlfriend and her ex-husband are also interviewed about their tumultuous relationship. The video follows the entire trajectory of Eminem’s relationship with the girl, from its blissful beginning to its heated, emotional end.

Sheeran, who co-wrote “River” with Eminem and Emile Haynie, kicks off the song by singing the beginning hook “I’ve been a liar, been a thief/Been a lover, been a cheat/All my sins need holy water, feel it washing over me.” He’s also seen talking about love and trust, singing in the rain and more.

A relationship which begins in secret blasts on like a speeding rollercoaster with extreme highs and lows throughout the turbulent visual. Per the lyrics, Eminem knows he’s being used by her “to play him,” but he doesn’t care. An explosive argument breaks out when she shocks him with news of an unwanted pregnancy.

“River” is the second single from Eminem’s chart-topping ninth studio album, Revival. The audio version of the video has garnered over 91 million views to date. The track topped the UK Singles chart and hit No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The album’s lead single, “Walk on Water,” features Beyonce’ and hit the Top 10 on multiple international charts.
