On Nov. 12, Eminem reasserted his artistic primacy by opening the 2017 MTV European Music Awards with an explosive performance of his new single “Walk on Water.”
Eminem, clad in his traditional uniform of a black hoodie and cap, stared directly into the camera as he intensely rapped lyrics about the immense pressure he feels about living up to his substantial legacy. Although Em’s “Walk on Water” collaborator Beyoncé was not in attendance, but singer-songwriter Skyler Gray proved to be up the task of performing the song’s chorus. The “Lose Yourself” hit maker needed to give a grand slam performance to prove he was still relevant in 2017, and he did just that on Sunday night.
The man born Marshall Mathers also picked up a Best Hip Hop EMA Award, defeating worthy contenders Drake, Post Malone, Future and Kendrick Lamar. The award win follows on Emimen’s return to the music game, which began in earnest with the Nov. 10 release of “Walk on Water,” which has already racked up more than 14 million views on YouTube.
Eminem next be seen on the November 18 episode of “Saturday Night Live” which will be hosted by Chance the Rapper.
