James Arthur apparently watched “A Star Is Born” and was moved by Lady Gaga’s emotional ballad “I’ll Never Love Again.” The UK-based pop superstar and former “X Factor UK” champ typed a comment about it underneath his live YouTube cover of the song saying, “Watched #AStarIsBorn and was quite moved by this song so I thought I’d have a crack at it.”
Arthur is accompanied by a single keyboardist in the black-and-white clip and he’s seated on a stool with a mic while singing the song. The track is a vulnerable, raw ballad which encompasses the life-altering love “A Star Is Born” director-co-writer and lead actor Bradley Cooper’s character Jackson Maine finds with Lady Gaga’s aspiring singer-songwriter character Ally. Gaga sings it at the end of the film, with a flashback showing Jackson singing it for Ally, as a love song he wrote for her.
James Arthur’s vocal range is perfect for this kind of emotional track. He’s known for delivering aching ballads of his own like “Naked” and his UK chart-topping single “Say You Won’t Let Go.” Arthur injects his own soulful runs in just the right places and his delicate falsetto shines under the tender, emotional weight of the ruminating lyrics.
As previously reported, Lady Gaga scored her fourth UK chart-topper with the soundtrack from “A Star Is Born” and the album also debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S. The film’s other prominent love song, “Shallow,” is a duet from Cooper and Gaga which hit No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week ending Oct. 20 and “I’ll Never Love Again” cracked into the Hot 100 Top 40, charting at No. 36.
James Arthur’s most recent album, Back From the Edge, heat the top of the UK Albums chart and peaked at No. 8 in the U.S. on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart. He recently received recognition for “Say You Won’t Let Go” as a Pop Award Song at the 2018 BMI London Awards.
