Donald Glover was in attendance at the BET Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night, where the "Atlanta" star was enjoying his nomination for Best Actor. Although the award ultimately went to Chadwick Boseman for his portrayal of the title superhero in this year’s Black Panther film, it was Glover to seemingly stole the show alongside Jamie Foxx with an unscripted, impromptu performance of his latest hit single, “This Is America.”
Surprisingly, the widely talked-about video for the Childish Gambino track was not nominated for “Video of the Year,” but that didn’t stop the talented performer from diving into the song’s more melodic opening verse, thanks to a little encouragement from Foxx, who was hosting the awards show at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater.
"Everybody begged me to do a joke about [‘This Is America.’] I said, 'That song should not be joked about,'" Foxx reportedly told the audience prior to bringing Glover onto the stage. The two stylishly dressed men then went into an a-cappella version of the song beginning with Foxx mimicking the track’s instrumental opening before Glover shyly and almost reluctantly joins in with a moment of fun for the fans. The entire short performance can be watched in full via the Twitter video below.
Although Glover didn’t take home any awards on Sunday, he has managed to come out the winner of 2018’s overall entertainment landscape. Glover will be part of a handful of movies due out (or already) out in 2018, including the return of his acclaimed “Atlanta” series on FX earlier this year. He’s also hitting the road for a North American concert tour later this fall alongside acts like Tyler, The Creator and Vince Staples. Tickets for select shows on the fall headlining tour, which is scheduled to begin Sept. 6, are on sale now and can be purchased by clicking here.
