Josh Groban released a stirring new lyric video for “River” which hails from his upcoming album Bridges, which will be released on Sept. 21.

Groban called “River” a “really personal song” on Facebook. In it, he references an inexplicable feeling of gloom as he sings of not being quite sure why he’s lonely and how sometimes he’s “too proud to ask for help” and he walks down to the river in search of peace.

Later, the Grammy and Tony-nominated singer addresses a more universal feeling of anxiety and despair in the lines “this raging world can get so overwhelming/looking for a meaning when it won’t make sense” adding “in my head it's getting loud/Like I can’t outrun this cloud/No matter where I go well there I am …”

Ultimately, he sings of finding the peace and hope he’s looking for when he walks “down to the river” and is reminded “the sun will be there when we wake.” Groban’s lyrical river can metaphorically represent any person, place, or thing in which we can find solace from sorrow or calm in a storm, be it mental, emotional or physical.

The rich melody has a gospel-infused feel and overall, Groban bolsters us up in the song’s underlying message of hope because again, “the sun will be there when we wake.” He gently reminds us the light will ultimately break through the darkness. That even when we’re at our worst, most desperate moment if we can just get to our “river,” calm down and let inner peace take hold, we can push forward.

As always, Groban leads us on the song’s complex emotional journey with his vibrant, soul-stirring vocals that soar to sparkling heights with his signature falsetto in the chorus.

The “River” lyric video follows lyric videos for “Symphony” and “Granted” and an audio version of the French song “S'il Suffisait D'aimer.” Bridges is the highly-anticipated follow up to Groban’s triumphant, Grammy-nominated, Broadway-themed album Stages. As previously reported, Bridges contains duets with renowned music superstars like Andrea Bocelli, Sarah McLachlan and Jennifer Nettles.

Josh Groban is touring on the Bridges Tour with special guest Idina Menzel, which includes a stop at Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth, Georgia on Oct. 18 (Tickets).
