There's a lot at stake on screen and off-screen for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the 2018 remake of "A Star Is Born." The movie is the directorial debut for Cooper, and is Lady Gaga's first starring role as an actress in a feature film. They both do their own singing in the movie and co-wrote the original songs in the film. In Warner Bros. Pictures' first official trailer for the movie, the plot seems to follow closely with previous "A Star Is Born" films: a male star in showbiz meets an aspiring female entertainer, they fall in love, and he helps her become famous. What isn't shown in the first trailer is another well-known part of the "A Star Is Born" story: how substance abuse and fluctuating career success affect the couple's relationship. However, if you look closely, the movie trailer shows quick, subtle flashes of alcoholism being in the film.
Cooper plays country singer Jackie Maine, while Lady Gaga plays Ally. The trailer shows the beginning of their relationship, with Ally as an insecure singer/songwriter who gets her big break from Jackie. Although country music seems to play a major role in the movie, the trailer indicates that the Ally character will have a big singing voice with a rock/pop edge as she belts out her songs. Although the soundtrack's release date and track listing have not been announced yet, Warner Bros. Pictures has revealed that the original songs in the movie were recorded live. In addition to Cooper, Lady Gaga worked with other writers for the movie's original songs, including Mark Ronson, Lukas Nelson and Jason Isbell.
The Cooper-directed "A Star Is Born" is the fourth "A Star Is Born" movie. In the original 1937 "A Star Is Born" film, the couple was played by Fredric March and Janet Gaynor, who both portrayed actors in the movie. In the 1954 "A Star Is Born" film, James Mason played a fading movie star, while Judy Garland played a singer. In the 1976 "A Star Is Born" movie, Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand both played rock singers.
The 2018 version of "A Star Is Born" is set for release on Oct. 5. Cooper is not only the director of the movie, but he is also one of the film's producers and screenwriters. The movie's cast also includes Sam Elliott, Dave Chappelle and Andrew Dice Clay. Cooper is best known for his roles in "The Hangover" movies, "Silver Linings Playbook," "American Hustle" and "American Sniper." He earned Oscar nominations for his roles in the latter three movies. Lady Gaga starred in the 2017 Netflix documentary "Gaga: Five Foot Two" and in FX's "American Horror Story: Hotel." She previously had small roles in the movies "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," "Muppets Most Wanted" and "Men in Black 3."
