Buzz continues to build for the Oct. 5 nationwide theatrical release of “A Star Is Born” starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. And, Gaga just gave fans the ultimate preview by dropping the epic music video and single for “Shallow.” The Grammy and Golden Globe-winning singer-actress debuted the song on Beats 1 today (Sept. 27) with Zane Lowe and she had nothing but praise for the film’s director and her co-star, Bradley Cooper.
“I just feel so overwhelmed with gratitude and I feel so humbled to be a part of this film,” Gaga told Lowe. “It’s been an incredible experience and Bradley Cooper is just, he’s such an incredible filmmaker, an incredible actor, producer, screenplay writer, songwriter. I mean, I watched him become a musician before my eyes and I loved singing with him. I love his voice.”
“Shallow” is co-written by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. Cooper and Gaga perform it together in a duet and you can watch them do it in the video. Gaga’s character, Ally, faces her fears looking out into the crowd to belt the song, while Cooper’s character, Jackson Maine, watches her while playing guitar and smiling. It’s obvious he knows he’s sharing the stage with a star – only she doesn’t know it yet. Their voices blend sweetly on the chorus and her confidence grows as the song swells. Overall, we’re witnessing a piece of musical and cinematic magic.
Gaga was totally impressed by Bradley Cooper’s raw, natural talent when they first met to discuss the film. She told Lowe she was “blown away” when she first heard him sing and added, “There’s people that can technically sing perfectly and have no soul. And, with Bradley, he just sings from his soul and he knows how to tell a story when he’s singing. I heard it right away and I knew in that moment –I’m kind of a bit of a snob when it comes to watching actors who play rock stars- but, I’m telling you, I was like This man knows how to be a rock star. One hundred percent he’s the only human on this planet that could have played this role.”
As Lowe points out in the interview, there’s already a ton of Oscar buzz for this film. And, “Shallow” could easily be a contender for Best Original Song. Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real are the band for Jackson Maine in the film. Nelson is the son of legendary singer Willie Nelson.
As previously reported, Warner Brothers did a live stream of the London premiere of the movie earlier today. Gaga also talked about “Shallow” with Lowe saying, “It’s two people talking to each other and talking about the need and the drive to dive into the deep end and stay away from the shallow area.”
The “Shallow” music video has already garnered over 440,000 views since it posted today. “A Star Is Born” 2018 also stars Sam Elliott as Jackson’s brother and manager Bobby. Dave Chappelle plays Jackson’s friend Noodles and Andrew Dice Clay as Ally’s father Lorenzo.
Cooper was deeply committed to staying true to the concert experience. So, all the performances were notably shot live. Gaga and Cooper co-wrote many of the tracks on the “A Star Is Born” soundtrack, which will drop on Oct. 5, upon the film’s release.
